Aeroplan Carbon Offset Program
Green it up
At Aeroplan, we strongly believe we can all do more to learn about and reduce the environmental impact of our actions and activities. This is why we have launched the Green it up Program to reduce our environmental footprint and make a positive difference in greening up the world we live in.
Aeroplan’s carbon offset program
Aeroplan acknowledges that air travel is a source of global greenhouse gas emissions, and that their potential impact is severe enough that we all need to find ways to reduce them. At the same time, air travel is an important part of our program and significant reductions in flying are simply not possible for many of our members. This is why we have chosen to launch a carbon offset program, as part of our overall Green it up Program, allowing our members to offset their flight rewards using Aeroplan Miles.
When you voluntarily choose to offset the greenhouse gas emissions from your flight reward(s), you send a powerful message that you acknowledge the potential impact of your activities and want to take action.
There are two ways to offset flight rewards using Aeroplan Miles. Members can either offset them when completing a flight reward booking online at aeroplan.com or redeem their Aeroplan Miles for carbon offsets through our online Activities and Merchandise catalogue.
Aeroplan Miles redeemed for carbon offsets are transferred to the Carbon Reduction Fund. The Carbon Reduction Fund is an independent, non-profit organization with the mission of finding and/or creating, then funding only the highest-quality offset projects.

You have two ways to contribute to the Carbon Reduction Fund
After completing your booking online
If you have enough Aeroplan Miles left in your account following your flight reward booking, the number of Aeroplan Miles needed to offset the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from your flight reward(s) are automatically calculated for you. Aeroplan matches the Aeroplan Miles you contribute by an additional 20%, transferring the total sum to the Carbon Reduction Fund. As Aeroplan is taking the extra step of matching your contribution by an additional 20%, we can together remove more emissions than were created by your air travel.
After completing your booking through our Contact Centre
For the time being, we are not able to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from your flight reward(s) when you complete your booking through our Contact Centre. However, you may use your Aeroplan Miles to redeem for carbon offsets through our Activities & Merchandise catalogue
If I complete my air reward booking on aeroplan.com, how do you calculate the greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) from my flight reward(s)?
CO2 emissions are calculated on a per person basis. This is an estimate obtained by dividing the approximate total fuel used for a given flight by the estimated number of passengers. This number is then multiplied to take into account the additional climate-changing effects of jet fuel emissions at high altitudes. For the present time, Aeroplan uses a multiplication factor of 2.7, as recommended by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
- Within North and Central America, you will generally need between 200 and 5,600 Aeroplan Miles to offset your return travel.
- From Canada to Europe, South America, North Africa and the Middle East, you will generally need between 5,700 and 13,000 Aeroplan Miles to offset your return travel.
- From Canada to other destinations, you will generally need between 14,000 and 22,000 Aeroplan Miles to offset your return travel.
